Edinburgh Water Treatment Plant

Town of Edinburgh, IN

The Town of Edinburgh, IN owned and operated a packaged treatment unit which was originally constructed in the 1990s. However, recent years had shown increasing manganese levels in the effluent from the water treatment plant. Customers were increasingly complaining about water quality, and it became clear the filters were no longer adequately performing for manganese removal. In 2020, Wessler prepared a preliminary engineering report to evaluate alternatives and determined that a new water treatment plant was the best option to meet the Town’s technical, financial and operational needs. The study also collaborated with Westech Engineering, LLC to perform pilot testing. Using the Town’s source of water, different media options were evaluated to determine what media would most effectively remove the manganese. This validated that the new filters would work and the project would truly solve the Town’s water quality problems. After determining the correct media for the application, the project moved forward into design and construction and was fully completed and on-line in 2024. The project was funded with a combination of SRF loan and OCRA grant funding.
