East Michigan Road Reconstruction

Shelbyville

With two 12-foot travel lanes, one 16-foot two-way left turn lane, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and a storm sewer system, East Michigan Road from Saraina Road to Progress Parkway was designed and reconstructed as a non-freeway urban minor arterial roadway. The Wessler team provided survey, design, bidding assistance and construction inspection services and coordinated with the utility companies to get most utilities relocated before construction started. Water utility officials decided to replace the water main, so it was installed at the same time the road was constructed.

Maintenance of traffic was critical during construction because of access to large commercial businesses in the area and a dead-end street in one of Shelbyville’s industrial parks. With the project designed to be built in two phases, Wessler developed a one-way loop to ensure access to businesses during construction in phase one. In addition, the Wessler team provided an economic solution by bidding alternate subgrade treatment options saving the city approximately $150,000 (10% of the project cost).
