Water Treatment Plant Improvements

Remington

Prior to the improvement project, stained laundry, taste and odor were all familiar to the town’s drinking water utility customers because of high levels of iron in the water.

Remington’s proximity to I-65 meant a large water user could request to connect to the water system at any time, so a plan for dealing with these items was critical to town officials. They used a State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan to fund the improvements and significantly update the town’s water system to meet needs well into the future.

Wessler provided planning, design, survey, permitting, bid, and construction phase services for the project, including the development of all the process control programming for the automation of the wells and treatment plant.

The construction of the 1,200 gallons-per-minute (GPM) treatment plant included:

  • three 400 GPM horizontal pressure filters
  • three 400 GPM high service pumps
  • expansion capacity for an additional aerator, filter and high service pump
  • chlorine gas feed equipment with air scrubber safety equipment
  • well rehabilitation and pump replacement
  • concrete detention and backwash tanks
  • standby generator
  • system-wide SCADA replacements and upgrades to hardware, software, alarming and controls
  • integrated flow metered and chemical analyzers for automated process control.

The project was completed on time and within budget, allowing the remaining project loan contingency funds to be used to maintain and improve other lower priority items in the water system. With the addition of the new iron filtration plant, iron levels in the distribution system were below detection levels.
